About Safe Schools guide
Founded in 2018 by Durban High School, The Safe Schools Guide (SSG) is dedicated to empowering schools across South Africa. Our mission is to educate and support schools in adopting safeguarding best practices to protect learners, staff, and stakeholders from sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, as well as neglect. Together, we can create a safe and nurturing environment for all.
Our Focus
⦁ Raise Awareness: Educate school stakeholders—including School Management, Governing Body Members, Staff, Parents, and Learners—about the risks of abuse and harassment in schools.
⦁ Equip Stakeholders: Provide training and resources to help implement effective safeguarding processes and structures to protect all vulnerable individuals, especially children and young adults.
⦁ Educate on Effective Response: Empower stakeholders with knowledge and strategies to address and manage incidents of harassment and abuse effectively, in line with current legislation and global best practices.
Our Vision
At SSG, our mission is to enhance the safety and protection of students across schools in South Africa by:
⦁ Partnering with School-Based Organisations: Collaborating directly with educational institutions to implement effective safeguarding strategies.
⦁ Engaging Specialist Professionals: Working with expert organisations specialising in child protection and safeguarding to ensure best practices.
⦁ Hosting Seminars and Workshops: Offering educational seminars on critical topics related to safeguarding and child protection.
⦁ Promoting Best Practices: Advocating for the adoption of comprehensive safeguarding measures to create safer learning environments.
⦁ Providing Valuable Resources: Publishing tools and materials to assist schools in safeguarding learners and other stakeholders involved in education and sports.
We believe that every child has the right to learn in a safe and nurturing environment, free from any form of harm. By empowering schools and communities, we can redefine the future for our children and contribute to a world where every learner can thrive and reach their full potential.
